The dog days are over, the dog days are done.....

Or have they just begun?

This morning Monica and I took Bello and the little dogs  to the off leash park. Bello is a seasoned veteran, but this was the maiden voyage for Herman and Gertie. Herman has been off-leash in remote areas many times, and is usually glued to Monica's heels anyway. Gertie however, had never been free because of her tendency to escape the yard, front door etc and the resulting chase. I had high hopes that the dog park would be a different environment and result in different behavior and Gertie did not disappoint! Being tiny, as well as being multi-home rescue dogs has made both little dogs hostile greeters. Not only did Gertie not run away and keep on running, both little dogs greeted people and other dogs with more manners than I had thought possible. It was a huge success.......until the poodles.

If you know me, you probably know how I feel about poodles, especially of the apricot variety. These were four enormous standard poodles, and two of them were quite aggressive. They cornered Gertie in a ditch where in true Chihuahua fashion she screamed blue bloody murder until she could be rescued. They then turned on Herman and chased him, screaming, across the length of the park. Monica saved him, and nobody was hurt, just a little shaken up. I thought surely Bello would have gone after them to save Herman, but he went for a dip in the pond instead.

Everybody seems to have recovered....

My current project is preparing the Kitchen and dining room for it's "facelift" in August, but I am also starting to get my summer reading goals organized! I know, I'm lame. The thing is, a degree requires you to have a lot of knowledge about your subject area, and the reading you do in classes is actually a very slim portion of what you need to read. During the school year independent learning becomes more difficult while I am juggling work/school/life so I like to take advantage of my more relaxed summer schedule.

My starting selections are: Pomosexuals, Canada's First Nations: 1850-1920 and Jacketing Bottles. Thats right, fucking ma-cra-me. Once the powers of macrame are mine, nothing will stop me. Nothing.

The ones I am most excited to read are the bell hooks books, because I always enjoy them, and the Play Power book. I bought the latter at the PGSO book sale, where I disappointed Monica (she loves to haggle and get a bargain) by surrendering $20 for the box of books we picked out together. I felt that because it was a non-profit fundraiser and not some garage sale, I didn't want to low ball them and look/feel like a douche bag.

The first chapter of Power Play is called "Carry on Motherfuckers" and starts like this: "They want bread?....Oh, they've got plenty of that, said Timothy, let them wear flowers. Fuck your flowers, said Stokeley, we want......Revolution? offered the Marx brothers, Danny, Rudi and Tariq. No! sang the Beatles in three catchy versions. None of which, responded the man in the burgundy vest, will equal the impact of cigarillos-the revolution in smoking peasure." The jacket says it's "a lively, contentious, panoramic book-important for those who consider themselves part of the Movement, essential for those outside it." It sounds right up my alley and I love the weird, Ogden Nash kind of way it's written.

It's a lot to tackle, altogether, so I made myself a summer book-list gadget on the side of my blog so I could tick them off when I finished and feel like I did something this summer other than make lattes and watch Netflix.
